Sometimes I Wear Pajamas All Day And Drink Wine Out Of A Coffee Mug

By Deidre Heid

There’s something oddly therapeutic about listening to sappy songs while wearing your favorite pajamas when you are trying to get over someone. It’s the somewhat depressing action you take when all you need to do is throw yourself a pity party, pour a glass of wine and belt out the lyrics as if the song was intentionally written for you. And you know what? It’s totally okay to do that.

If you get stressed out about the fact that you’ve been broken up for several months but still don’t go a day without thinking about the person and replaying the best memories in your head, I hope you know that you aren’t alone. I’ve spent so many days drinking wine with my best girlfriends who are dealing with a broken heart and do you know what we all have in common?

The sadness doesn’t go away for a long time.

I have a friend who just told me the other day, “It’s been nine months and I still don’t go a day without thinking about him.” That’s what love does to you. And when you finally experience it with the right person, you’ll have an endless amount of new thoughts and memories that will never be able to compare to the old ones. Plus, they will never have to go anywhere because you have the rest of your life to keep creating new, memorable moments with that person. It’s kind of hard for me to imagine that happening, but when it does, I’ll probably finally realize exactly why the heartbreak was an important part of my journey.

We all go through times when we are sure we’re ready to move on. We download Bumble and Tinder, hoping to meet someone who can act as a distraction because we are positive that it’s finally time meet someone new. But the truth is, it never completely goes away.

We just have to get to a place where we are ready to stop making that person the focus of every thought.

Even if everything reminds you of them and it stings your heart day after day, you have to make an effort not to let it consume your mind. This is definitely not an easy task, but it’s all part of moving on.

When you find yourself changing your daily playlist from sappy, depressing songs to happy, upbeat ones, you’ll know you’ve made some serious progress.

But every once in awhile you need a bottle of wine, a best friend and Adele on repeat.

I can’t tell you how much money I’ve saved on therapy just by listening to “Someone Like You” after a couple glasses of wine. I don’t even care if you judge me for that.
