Three Things Every Single Girl Should Reflect On At The Start Of 2017

By Deidre Heid

We’re officially a month into a brand new year. In my opinion, the year doesn’t really get started until February. What does January have to offer us? We’re all trying to quit something or lose weight, giving ourselves unrealistic expectations for the upcoming year. Then we’re left disappointed at the end of the month when we don’t actually lose ten pounds or give up wine for 30 days. January is the worst.

February, however, is the month I find myself making realistic health and fitness goals (because those five days without wine from Jan 2-6 were basically the worst days of my life). I realize the importance of not depriving myself of the things I enjoy most, but also not overdoing it on the things that might not be that great for me. I’m starting to get motivated about some business goals and find myself confident that God has an incredible plan for me in 2017. February is the best. And it’s the month we should really start to reflect on the upcoming year.

Here are three things I’ve realized that every single girl should be reflecting on at the start of 2017.

1. Do I love myself as much as I love the idea of meeting the one?

If you immediately found yourself answering “no” in your head, then you probably aren’t ready to meet the one. I’ve been in a place where I figured that once I met someone, all the things I didn’t like about my life would just disappear. That’s not true. If you hate your job as a single woman, the same issues will still be there when you’re dating someone. If you have troubles with your friendships now, the problems won’t disappear when you’re happily in love.

You have the time and freedom now, while being single, to take control of all the things you aren’t happy with in your life and make them right before you find yourself distracted by a guy.

Take advantage of that opportunity and learn to love your life as it is right this very moment. Once you do, you’ll find it so much easier not to focus all your thoughts on the fact that you’re single because you’ll be too busy enjoying your awesome freaking life.

2. Am I doing something today my future self with thank me for?

I am one of those people who refuses to settle for mediocrity. I strive for change and I love having a project, or a challenge; something that I work on from the start and watch it expand and grow into something bigger and better.

So if you’re coasting along life unmotivated to learn anything new or spark conversation with a stranger, then you probably aren’t spending your days with the future in mind.

If you find yourself working a job you don’t love that isn’t helping you bring your dream to life, you’re not doing much to benefit your future. I’m all about living in the moment, but I also have things I am working to achieve. Find the right balance and get to work.

3. Am I willing to step out of my comfort zone on a daily basis?

Stop for a minute and think about your Monday-Friday last week. Did you pretty much follow the same exact routine each workday? Do you find yourself visiting the same neighborhood for dinner and drinks?

Sometimes, a solid weekly routine can keep us from ever meeting someone new or experiencing something different.

Try out a new neighborhood or activity. Attend a sporting event instead of going to a wine bar. Join Match.com instead of swiping on Bumble. Mixing up your regular routine just might cause you to cross paths with someone new. Make a list of the best happy hour spots you haven’t been to and try a new one each Friday. Stepping out of your comfort zone is sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself.

So let’s celebrate the end of January and make some realistic life-changing goals for the new year. Imagine how far we’d all be if we started this a year ago.
